Precaution
Before seeing "Mandy", you have to know who his director is. Panos Cosmatos who signs his second film here, is the son of George Pan Cosmatos, who died in 2005, a small master of the B series of the 70s and 80s, whose most famous film was "Rambo 2". But to whom we also have a James Bond, "Cassandra Bridge" or "Tombstone". The most geeks of the 80s will remember them especially "Cobra" with Sylvester Stallone or "Leviathan" a remake of Alien under water quite honest. "Mandy" is very clearly a tribute to 80s genre cinema and Panos is very happy to let go of everything in the too much! The story, like any good B-movie that respects itself, is not subtle. Moreover it is pretty well summarized in the trailer: The woman of Red Miller is murdered by villains, he will take revenge! Say so, it would not be the same scenario as dad's "Rambo"? Okay, Rambo did not have a wife ... Well, the story is short. Let's go to the casting. Nicolas Cage, in the role of Rambo ... sorry ... Red Miller, an American lumberjack that must not be shit! And all that happens of course in the 80s. So who says film tribute, says cult scenes. I will not spoil the film, but say that you would not be disappointed in terms of clichés to the clichés of the genre and that not without humor. A self-parody of the genre that Nicolas Cage knows very well play. When the staging reaches the indigestible by dint of vibrating music on a plane in slow motion, or gore with shots of hemoglobins, always happens a good gag to dislodge the film and leave again more beautiful. But beware, parody does not mean pastiche, because if the spirit B is there, its shape is well in the 21st century. Very successful scenery and a fabulous photo direction! The boredom before the deliverance, a small and late deliverance ... "Mandy" is a very basic and superficial film revenge despite an interesting and rich universe that is never exploited. We are quickly immersed in a unique and captivating universe, a kind of nightmare that will prove very real for Red. The film is cut in two parts: the first on the pre-drama which is laborious, slow and uninteresting and the second on the revenge which is very classic. Films like this are never deep, they are above all entertainment that must be enjoyable which is not the case here. The setting up is really too long and the director does not really linger on the couple. The wicked are grotesque while their motives are nonexistent. While the couple is just a couple among many others. Mandy gets burned alive. So what ? This is what is missing, there is no extra soul that would make us want to attend this revenge. Three or four poor clashes that are quickly shipped. Yes, it's gore and violent, but it's not entertaining. There are beautiful shots, beautiful colors and a universe that, I repeat, seems rich, but also final, all that seems to be just wind. It's a soulless film that releases nothing, perhaps to stick to the character who knows. Nicolas Cage who is freewheeling and who thinks only revenge and nothing else. This is what I expected so I'm not disappointed by cons I hoped to hang more in the universe, the atmosphere and what emerges the film in general.
